Cathedrals, Drowned Men and Misfits:
Towards an Ethics of Fiction

Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 7:00 PM

Meet Deborah Harter, an AAUW Dissertation Year Fellow in 1987, who vividly recalls the enormous difference the award made to her. It led to the completion of her doctorate in comparative literature at UC Berkeley, a Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Chicago, and a faculty position in the Department of French Studies at Rice University in 1990.

Dr. Harter will explore the ethical dimension of great fiction which may confront us with moral dilemmas that challenge our thinking, that ask us to refashion the truths we think we understand and that change who we are. She will reference short stories by Raymond Carver, Gabriel Garcia-Marquez and Flannery O’Connor.

THE MUSEUM OF PRINTING HISTORY

September 8, 2010

Join us on Wednesday, September 8, as we take a tour of The Museum of Printing History, one of Houston’s best kept secrets! Printing, literacy, knowledge, freedom… These words summarize the purpose and mission of this unique museum which is proud to be one of only four museums in the country dedicated to the preservation of printing history. The Museum brings together fascinating examples which emphasize the tremendous contribution that the printing process has made to human history. We will be given a tour of the museum, experience using a replica of Johann Gutenberg’s printing press, meet the resident artist, Charles Criner, and view the current retrospective of one of America’s most well-respected bookbinders, Texas-based Craig W. Jenson. We will complete our tour by viewing a very interesting film, Harvest of Wisdom. Afterwards, we will have an all inclusive prepaid lunch at beautiful Vincent’s Restaurant located right around the corner from the museum. To make your reservation for the museum tour and lunch, please send your check for $35 payable to Diana Guarniere, 13814 Kimberley Lane, Houston, TX 77079. The deadline for receipt of your check is September 4. The bus will leave the Memorial City parking lot at the corner of Barryknoll and Memorial City Way promptly at 9:15 a.m. We will return about 3 p.m.
